In Between

Chenxi Xu | Artist China

The states of being unresolved, suspended, and actively courting risk were the first to register during this residency. These states became the fuel driving my motivation to paint, granting me the courage to keep moving forward.
Throughout the residency, what seemed like chaos—both externally and internally—did not act as an obstacle; rather, it gradually became a form of faith. At times, it appeared disordered; at other times, influenced by its surroundings, it became strikingly clear. This oscillation magnified
my trust in “feeling” as an individual—and in the outcomes that naturally arose from it. Nepal, for me, embodies this very dynamic. Beneath its seemingly chaotic surface lies a stable, core structure of belief, allowing this place to exist in a forceful and vivid way. It is like an abstract painting, suggesting countless concrete forms while remaining suspended at the edge of clarity.
Everything here encourages me to begin rendering—a habit rooted in my personal history, which, under the “photosynthesis” of this light and environment, amplifies my courage to disrupt established orders.
Behind each painting lies a process that may seem singular yet is continuously unfolding. In front of this series, what persists is the ever-moving presence of myself: my posture, my breathing, my repeated reflections, my moments of relaxation and meditation. I work alongside these processes, pushing them toward a result I am willing to believe in—one that approaches a sense of eternity. The resulting images are merely fleeting glimpses of life and living, yet they constitute the most intense vibration of this journey.
